Volvo Acquires Polestar, Plans To Make More Performance Models

Volvo has acquired Polestar

Volvo just bought out Polestar, makers of their more powerful engines. Could this mean a full sport-spec division?

Volvo is changing its game

Last week’s announcement of lifetime warranties seems to be just a cog in the machine that is reshaping Volvo. Earlier today Volvo announced they now wholly own Polestar, the makers of their beefier engines. Such an acquisition has led to industry speculation that the Swedish car giant intends to have their own dedicated performance division, much like BMW’s M and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG divisions.

That should attract some serious customers, now not only can you have a Polestar branded Volvo that will rival even the widest bodykitted 3-series, but for a price you can hoon it around for life and never worry about replacement parts. That combined with the news that Polestar is excited to utilize Volvo’s hybrid technology to make something seriously mind-bending should be enough to turn the head of even the most fanatical gearhead.

What we are witnessing is the solidification of a 20 year relationship that promises very heavy technological and performance innovation. Volvo’s AWD cars are already popular in Canada, combining additional performance with what is arguably the world’s foremost safety record sounds like a great thing. “Is Billy going to be safe this weekend?” “Sure honey, I left him the Volvo…” as Dad winks at Billy, signalling “Don’t wreck the tires too bad, son.” It sounds like us that Volvo wants to reinvent the sleeper, and intends to help you pay for it if you keep wrecking parts. Thanks Volvo! While it won’t be cheap, we expect to see lots of new Volvo tire smoke around Montreal and Toronto in the coming years.
