The California-based firm Tesla has confirmed the news of about is 2016 Model X SUV, which is close to production. The company has also mentioned about the powertrain details of the vehicle, and the fact that it will be having ‘falcon wing’ doors.

Tesla has confirmed the car details on its website, a year ahead of its release date sometime in early 2016. The vehicle will be based on the platform of this executive saloon of the Model S, and it is set to be only a 4-wheel drive consisting of two electric motors.

The main page for this SUV on the Tesla website now reads “every Model X comes standard with Dual Motor All Wheel Drive”. This indicates that the company has decided it will not offer its single-motor setup with a rear wheel drive, which comes in every Model S other than the P85D.

The car will be on sale with the two-motor and all-wheel drive setup as its standard equipment. This technology has newly been integrated into the Model S sedan of the brand. According to a post on its consumer website, Tesla has confirmed that buyers will get 3 varied powertrain variants of the vehicle – an 85 kWh Performance package trim, an 85 kWh trim and a 60 kWh trim.

The Model X will be powered by two electric mills, one on the rear axle and another on the front axle. These will make use of the continuously variable torque split system from Tesla in order drive power to the suitable wheels.

The manufacturer has also confirmed on its website that during the production stage, Model X will be coming with “Falcon Wing” doors. Even from parking spaces that are narrowest, the doors fold up and go out of the way in order to admit easy access to the seats on the 3rd row.

The range for the 2016 Model X SUV is likely to be more or less similar to that offered by the Model S and it is about 300 miles with its 85 kWh battery. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, reports that the first of the Model X crossovers are likely to be shipped to buyers in this summer.
