Mitsubishi Halts Sedan Development to Focus on SUVs, EVs

The Mistubishi PHEV Concept

This is what Mitsubishi’s future looks like, they recently announced that development of their ordinary cars will be paused for some time…

The small Lancer car from the stable of Mitsubishi is not going to be substituted in the near future, as has been revealed by Tetsuro Aikawa – the COO of the company. The present model will continue, possibly without any major improvements.

Alongside, Tetsuro Aikawa has also revealed in a latest interview with Car Advice that at present Mitsubishi does not have any plans to develop new sedans. It is trying to concentrate all its efforts on EVs and PHEVs such as the Outlander.

This new stand of the company is likely to astonish some individuals. In Geneva, the Japanese bigwig only had SUVs on display this year. Also, they appear to be concentrating on electric stuff rather than standard powertrains. Clearly, the company is having a change in its approach.

This new showing is explained by the fact that the company is trying to shift its attention from some its classic models and focus instead on SUVs and crossovers. For some unknown cause, the iconic Lancer is going to be among these classic models which are going to be ignored for some time now.

Tetsuro Aikawa said, “Unfortunately, for a while we are not planning any development of sedans. While I’m the president probably no introduction of the next-generation Lancer… we will continue to sell current Lancer.”

This is likely to be very troubling for people who love the brand, particularly the Lancer community that makes up a sizeable population. The present model of the Lancer is eight years old already and could benefit from some technological enhancements if Mitsubishi actually intends to keep the vehicle surviving in the market and have it sell a few units.

Other than talking about shifting its focus from enhancing its iconic models, Aikawa also talked about how competitive the market for sedans has become and how tough it is these days to make a profit on these vehicles.

But this also indicates that there is no version of the Evo to be coming up any time soon, and this is truly disheartening. The car many people have grown up with could be deserted owing to changes in demands in the market.
