BMW Shows Off Some Of Its Rarest Machines At Legends of the Autobahn Concours D’Elegance

Ultra Rare - BMW M3 GTR Road Version

Hi-Res wallpaper fans rejoice. We’ve got some extremely detailed images of a couple of the rarest BMWs ever. If you can get to Monterey, California on August 14, we suggest you check them out in person.

It’s rare and it’s glorious.

BMW is showing off their dominant 2001 M3 GTR, displaying both the track and road versions at the upcoming Legends of the Autobahn Concours D’Elegance on August 14, as part of the company’s 40th anniversary celebration this year.

The M3-GTR chassis number 006 has undergone a painstaking 18 month restoration process, it represents one of the most dominant years in motorsport that BMW has ever had. It marks the beginning of V8 engines in the M3 line, and was only around for the one season. That season consisted of basically a race between positions 1 and 2, much like the 2014 F1 season which had Mercedes at the top of the podium for almost every event. It prompted immediate rule changes from the American LeMans Series, which is pretty much any manufacturers ultimate bragging right.

The road version of the M3-GTR will be on display for only the second time ever in North America. According to BMW’s press release it’s one of their rarest entities of all time.

A total of six cars were completed before the program was terminated. Three of those were engineering development cars that were later recycled. Three production level examples were produced and these survive to this day as part of the BMW Group Classic collection. The road car debuted simultaneously at the Dubai importer and the Road Atlanta paddock during the 2001 Petit Le Mans event. The car presented in the paddock at the Petit Le Mans was only on display for approximately an hour before being loaded onto a transporter back to Munich. The GTR road cars have been cloaked in mystery and have been part of M3 lore ever since.

So here’s some extremely sexy and rare car-porn for you all to enjoy. Let this motivate you to get out and smoke some tires as summer winds down and winter approaches.
