Frankly, we at CanadaWheels welcome our Android overlords…

Chevrolet is coming up with as many as 14 new cars, integrated with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The models are going to start coming in only a few weeks.

These systems had been announced by Google and Apple Inc. as far back as in early 2014 and the majority of car manufacturer have opted for them ever since. The 14 models, according to Chevy, will constitute as much as 51% of the entire global sales from the brand.

The smartphone-compatible models will help drivers to link their smartphones to their vehicles with the help of a touchscreen installed within. Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, commented positively on the partnership of the company with Google and Apple, saying that the collaboration “is a great example of how Chevrolet continues to democratize technology that’s important to our customers.” She added that the partnership was needed as smartphones are essential for everyone these days.

Android Auto helps drivers to make use of Google Now, Google Maps and also access a variety of messaging software applications such as Skype and WhatsApp. CarPlay from Apple, on the other hand, helps drivers to call, exchange messages and listen to their favorite songs by commanding Siri or by using the touch screen. The apps can also be accessed from the touch screen of the car.

Barra also stated that a lot of the functions can be regulated right from the steering wheel of the new models.

The company also stated that with this expansion, Chevy is going to equip more vehicles with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, more than any other car maker. Chevrolet Silverado, Malibu, Spark and Camaro will be some of the models to be fitted with this technology. A number of models will come with either the 8” or the 7” MyLink Infotainment systems. The upcoming Chevrolet Cruz, which is set to debut on June 24, will also come with this technology.
