World First: Ford to Mass-Produce Carbon Fiber Wheels for Shelby GT350R

Carbon Cobra

Ford has announced they will be the first company in the world to mass product carbon fibre wheels, to be used on the Shelby GT350R

Space shuttle technology helped this happen…

Ford is ensuring their Shelby GT350R is the most insane version of a Mustang in history. The latest news about their track-ready beast is those rims. The first ever mass-produced carbon fibre wheels. You may be familiar with carbon fibre wheels on hypercars such as the Koenigsegg One:1, the perfect power-to-weight ratio, Michelin Pilot Super Sport shredding, world record breaking, custom one-off from Sweden. That car will cost you millions upon millions. It is simply astonishing that Ford wishes to take on such an ambitious project for a mass-produced machine.

Sounds like a ten thousand dollar repair bill waiting to happen, right? Not entirely right, Ford claims they have been rigorously testing these lightweight wheels, ensuring they will withstand things like curbstrikes, UV and chemical exposure, and extreme heat. One feature for withstanding heat is that slick, gloss-black finish. That’s not your average car paint, what you’re seeing is “ceramic plasma arc spray” the same coating used on Space Shuttle main engine turbine blades. If it’s good enough for space flight, it’s probably decent enough for the track.

Anyone from Vancouver want to test exactly how tough these things are? What about someone from Montreal? Call Ford right away these Hyper-Snakes are going to go fast. Someone get the Hoonigan guys on the phone!
