Volkswagen Placed 1-2-3 In Their Home WRC Event

VW Dominating World Rally

Because who doesn’t love more rally news? Volkswagen is on pace to become a WRC legend with their dominant performance over the past few years.

Volkswagen just made patriotic Germans very proud.

The Volkswagen Polo is not available in Canada, sorry. Despite our national love of hot-hatches the German Uber-Manufacturer has yet to sell their “Mini-Golf” in the great white north. If you didn’t know this thing existed it’s understandable, and by looking at it you might assume it’s a Golf, but it’s not. It’s littler. But I digress…

A couple years ago, used the years of experience they’d accumulated bounding across the dunes of the killer Dakar rally and brought that knowledge to FIA WRC, the highest tier and most prestigious stage of rally competition in the world. In 2012 preparations were put in place to make a Rally-spec Polo R, it was an immediate success driving Sebastien Ogier to consecutive driver’s championships in 2013 and 2014 (he is also on pace to win this year and could clinch that victory in the next event, Australia, in two weeks). This kind of success is unprecedented for such an inexperienced manufacturer, which is quickly propelling them to legendary status. Despite all the wins, Rally Germany was an elusive podium for the team, you can almost feel the pride beaming from their press-release quotes, read what Volkswagen Motorsport Director, Jost Capito, had to say

A one-two-three at your home rally is certainly very special. However, given our history at this round of the World Championship, which was the only rally we had not won before today, it is more emotional than all the other victories we have celebrated. As always, every single person in the team was totally motivated and consciously did their bit to make this magnificent success possible. However, they actually managed to raise the bar even higher. The entire team – whether mechanic, engineer, logistician, chef, physio, doctor, management, or marketing and PR – has invested so much sweat and tears in this victory. That is what makes it so special.

So what more does Canada need to bring the FIA World Rally Championship here? We’ve got windy winter roads, we love hot-hatchbacks, we recently hosted another successful run of the FIA WRX Championship which even includes former WRC champion Petter Solberg. We’re ticking off boxes left and right here. Why not have an event in the mountains of BC? Or whip through farmer’s fields just outside Winnipeg? How about a street-based event through urban Montreal? Am I talking crazy here? Anyways, here’s a gallery of the Volkswagen Polo R WRC dominating its home event.
