Subaru has completed Fifteen Million Boxer engines, that’s a lot of engines!

Subaru, famous for its gold-wheeled crossovers and sedans with all-wheel-drive, has announced that it has constructed its 15 millionth Boxer engine, only 49 years after it set up a small, horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine in its 1966 1000 sedan.

When Subaru launched its 1000 compact passenger vehicle in May 1966, FHI powered the car with its first all-new boxer engine. The unique name of the Boxer engine comes from the design of the mill which comprises of a horizontally-opposed layout in which the pistons stand face to face with each other in a sideways symmetrical motion and appear to throw a punch at each other at the time of the combustion process.

With the creation of their 15 millionth boxer engine, Subaru and FHI have actually managed to reach a significant milestone with the production. Both have a big reason to celebrate as the milestone is a collective celebration of the success of their brands.

The boxer engine is made more effectual in the all-wheel drive multi-purpose vehicles from Subaru due to the way that it stays low in the chassis. Although the XV Crosstrek, Outback and Forester have a high ground clearance, the flat, low profile of the engine assists in lowering the center of gravity of the vehicle and improving its handling performance and driving stability.

However, the 15 millionth Boxer engine has not been the only achievement of the brand this year. Only last month, the company has come out with its 14 millionth Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. For 43 years, Subaru has been coming out with this system and it appears that the production of its trademark AWD system will soon surpass the record of the Boxer engine.

When it comes to the automotive world, Boxer and Subaru are synonymous. Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), which makes Subaru vehicles, has aimed at getting the maximum benefits out of the Boxer engines and has continued to improve them to fuel its cars since 1966. With the Boxer engine reaching the staggering 15 million production mark, Subaru and FHI celebrate 49 years of partnership is manufacturing this 4-cylinder, water-cooled and horizontally-opposed aluminum engine.
