BMW i8 – International Engine of the Year

BMW i8 and Headline text

The i8 took home the top honour at this year’s International Engine Of The Year Awards.

BMW has dethroned Ford

Ford’s 1.0L Ecoboost had a good streak, but this years International Engine Of The Year Award has been presented to BMW for their 1.5L Hybrid powertrain available in the green-performance wetdream that is the i8. Ferrari took home awards for Best Performance Engine and Best Engine over 4L for the V8 available in the 458 Italia and Speciale. VW also won a slew of awards, that happens when you have fifty engines across a bajillion brands. Here’s the master-list of winners in case you love engines that much and want all the details.

Okay, big deal, right?  A bunch of engineers cuddling each other over their breakthroughs in efficiency. Not entirely so, judging this contest is actually a group of automotive journalists, with minimum one-decade of experience. Including a Canadian, David Booth, who writes for the National Post. It’s nice to see a local journalist on this list, it signifies that Canada’s presence in the market is indeed relevant.

After yesterday’s article about the VŪHL-05 drew eye-rolls from our peers, relating to how something like that will never be available up north, it’s reassuring to know that Canadians have a voice in this industry. Maybe if we get a little louder, our rules on performance vehicles will one day be reevaluated, and Ariel Atoms will flood the streets!
