Bilstein, a world leader in damping technology, is recognized for its high-performance products such as shock absorbers, coil overs, springs, and struts and as an innovative systems partner for the automobile industry. The company started its journey, in 1873, when August Bilstein created the foundations for Bilstein in Altenvoerde, Germany through the production of metal window fittings. The start of this production made the business well known not only within the borders of Altenvoerde but also abroad.
Through multiple successful innovations, the company was able to lay the foundations for future success. To meet business needs, Bilstein during their early stages, set up their own iron rolling mill in 1919, with the motto “A rolling stone gathers no moss”. In the 1920s Hans Bilstein had taken the company over from August Bilstein after returning from the USA with him new concepts for nickel- and chrome-plating processes. Towards the end of the 1920s, Hans Bilstein decided to make the company's debut in the automotive accessories industry, along with the co-operation of Berlin-based lifting gear company Levator-Hebezeuge-Fabrik.
A year after making their move into the automotive world, Bilstein became the first to supply chrome-plated bumper for mass-produced cars and the year after, they started to manufacture carjacks. Keeping in line with the company’s reputation for technical innovation, Bilstein was at the forefront in the introduction of the first usable side jack in the automotive world.
In 1954, Bilstein realized the potential of eliminating the physical disadvantages of the conventional telescopic shock absorbers, while making them lighter and customizable. With this, the company introduced the first mono-tube gas pressure shock absorber in a standard production Mercedes-Benz vehicle in 1957; still to date is considered a major contribution to active driving safety. Gas pressure technology is now used in all types of telescope shock absorbers developed for powerful, high-class cars.
Now the company is known for some of their popular products such as B8 5100 shocks, B4 shocks, B6 shocks, B12 suspension kits and more, for models such as Toyota, Chevrolet, Subaru, and more. To this day, the demands from their customers in the automotive and tuning industries, combined with its commitment to motorsports, are what drive development and modernization at Bilstein.
